The housing agency –

who we are and what we do

Women* who have experienced domestic violence and seek protection and help in Berlin women’s shelters, shelters or counselling centres urgently needtheir own, non-violent living space.  A variety of problems in the context of the violence experienced make it considerably more difficult to find accommodation. Many women* are socially isolated, have temporarily lost their jobs or ability to work, are partly in debt or have poor health.  The receipt of transfer payments can lead to additional stigmatisation. Single women and single mothers*, especially women* with several children or women* with a history of flight or migration are sometimes exposed to prejudice or racial discrimination when looking for accommodation.

On the free housing market, they have little chance of finding suitable housing. Affordable social housing is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain in Berlin. As a result, there are sometimes very long stays for women* and children in protective facilities that are actually designed for temporary stays.

Through its work, asap e.V.- Wohnungsvermittlung wants to support women* affected by violence in finding affordable housing tailored to their individual needs. We broker apartments both via the protected market segment (GMS) and via the freehousing market.

Our tasks

  • We provide housing for women affected by violence* and their children
  • We acquire housing offers via the free housing market, the protected market segment or existing cooperations
  • We look for offers, take over the mediation of apartments and support women affected by violence* in the application process
  • We take over a large part of the communication and organization of the application processes and keep track of all deadlines and to-dos
  • We are reliable contacts* for women looking for accommodation* as well as landlords

Note: We do not provide regular counselling in cases of domestic violence and we cannot offer any support with the application and organization of necessary application documents, but we are happy to refer women* seeking help to a specialist advice centre.
